Description
Offered here is a scarce sealed 1952 Cookie Jar Aromatic Pipe Mixture package from R.R. Tobin Tobacco Co. of Detroit, Michigan.
Before every aromatic had a catalog description, a flavor wheel, and a plastic tub, one Detroit tobacco man had a simpler idea:
Make a pipe tobacco that reminded a man of Grandmotherâs cookie jar.
Cookie Jar was promoted as a honey-and-rum cured aromatic pipe mixture, and the old advertising had all the charm a collector could ask for. Period ads called it:
âA Honey of a Tobaccoâ
and promised:
âYouâll go for it in a BIG WAY!â
That is exactly the world this package comes from: mid-century American pipe tobacco advertising, where aroma, mildness, sweetness, and a good name could sell a pouch across a drugstore counter.
The sealed package itself is marked:
Cookie Jar Pipe Mixture
Honey and Rum Cured
Aromatic
Made in U.S.A.
The wrapper features the little cookie jar artwork and carries a blue federal tobacco tax stamp indicating 3 1/8 ounces tobacco. The period advertising also ties the brand to R.R. Tobin Tobacco Co., 406 Woodbridge Ave., Detroit, Michigan, and mentions Tobinâs related Irish Mixture, noting that many smokers blended Cookie Jar with Tobinâs Irish for what the ad called a âgrand combination.â
That little detail gives this piece more depth. Cookie Jar was not just a nameless novelty package. It appears to have been part of a small Detroit tobacco houseâs line of blends â a regional aromatic with its own advertising, package art, sample coupon, and sales pitch.
The package copy is wonderful old tobacco language:
âCookie Jar Pipe Mixture is the final result of years of tobacco research endeavoring to perfect a tobacco mixture having all of the best qualities of the finest tobaccos ever placed upon the market â plus a mildness and fragrant aroma incomparable!â
Based on period advertising, Cookie Jar was being promoted by the 1940s, while the Series 122 tax stamp puts this particular package in 1952. That makes it a scarce surviving example of a regional American aromatic from the postwar tobacco counter.
This is not a common national brand every collector has seen a dozen times. It is an oddball Detroit-made aromatic with a terrific name, great package design, and exactly the kind of homey mid-century charm that makes small-maker tobacciana so fun to collect.
A sealed package of Cookie Jar Rum & Honey Pipe Mixture â a honey of a tobacco, still carrying Grandmotherâs cookie jar in its name.
