Description
Friends,
For your consideration is a beautiful, factory-sealed 14oz pop-top tin of Sir Walter Raleigh Special Mixture, produced by the original Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation of Louisville, Kentucky. The gold-and-red diagonal stripe design, bold portrait of Sir Walter, and clearly printed UPC code place it in the post-1974 era — the later years when this blend was still proudly made by its original creators before the brand changed hands.
Special Mixture was the “Sunday best” of the Sir Walter Raleigh family — the same dependable, mild Burley that had been an American staple since the 1920s, refined with a gentle aromatic top note for a richer, smoother, slightly sweeter smoke. Advertisements of the day promised “a little richer, a little smoother,” and for years that’s exactly what this blend delivered — whether enjoyed on a porch after supper, at a fishing dock on a quiet morning, or in the easy company of friends.
The Special Mixture variant has long been discontinued, and sealed 14oz tins from the Brown & Williamson era are not often seen. This example is bright and clean, with crisp graphics and an unbroken pop-top lid. It has been stored in a cool, dry environment since production, making it a well-kept piece of American pipe tobacco history.
This very blend was featured on my Pipe Appeal YouTube channel, where I showcased its history, character, and place in American pipe tobacco culture. You can watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVrXRFzBYv0.
For the collector who enjoys a touch of nostalgia, it’s a fine reminder of a time when tins like this were a common sight in the corner store — and a trusted companion to an evening smoke.
Thanks for your support, and swell smokes to you and yours always!
