Description

The reserve wasn’t met last time, so this wartime Capstan Full Strength tin is back with the opening bid set below the last high bid. There is no reserve, and it’s a quick three-day auction—when the clock runs out, the top bidder takes it home.

See video of actual tin listed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DOJqhBYguU

Capstan Navy Cut was a fixture of everyday life in Britain. Introduced by W.D. & H.O. Wills, it became a signature straight-Virginia blend sold in three strengths—Mild (yellow), Medium (blue), and Full Strength (brown). The brown-label stood apart for its body and depth, a choice for smokers who wanted something fuller without harshness.

The base embossing “NAAFI STORES FOR H.M. FORCES” marks this as issue stock supplied through the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes. British Tommies and sailors lit Capstan wherever they could find a moment—on mess decks, in billets, on leave. American GIs and airmen stationed in Britain often shared the same tins, discovering the sturdy character of Old World Virginias alongside their hosts. The taste traveled both directions, becoming a quiet thread of Allied memory.

At its core, Capstan is pure Virginia leaf. The familiar Medium is praised for bright sweetness; Full Strength carried those qualities into richer territory. Darker, matured Virginias offered warm bread, molasses, and dried fruit, with a smooth fullness that filled rooms with a sweet, earthy fragrance. Smokers who have opened preserved tins describe balance and refinement that outpaces the yellow and blue siblings. Full Strength was discontinued long ago—survivors like this are scarce, and for most people the flavor exists only in stories.

    Details & Condition

    – Maker: W.D. & H.O. Wills (Bristol &London)
    – Blend: Capstan Navy Cut — Full Strength (brown-label variant)
    – Era: World War II (early 1940s)
    – Military marking: Base embossed “NAAFI STORES FOR H.M. FORCES”
    – Weight: 2 oz (printed on side label)
    – Container: Original air-tight tin with built-in V-cut opener
    – Condition notes: The tin shows the gentle bulge often seen on well-sealed examples from this era, usually a promising sign of preserved contents. As with any 80+ year-old tobacco, the contents can’t be guaranteed, but this one presents beautifully and remains an outstanding survivor. There are a few small paper tears on the side label and areas of surface rust on the tin — entirely consistent with a relic this old and adding to its authentic patina.
    – Visuals: Wartime graphics with the Capstan ship motif, Wills trademarks, and the unmistakable brown Full Strength band.
