Description
Step into a warm oak-paneled evening, when a pipe, a soft chair, and a Dunhill tin were the proper close to a long day.
What you see here is one of those rare âtobacconist counterâ curiosities that almost never survives intact. A complete Dunhill Tobacco Collection twelve tin sampler, still in its original presentation box, and still unopened. A pocket-sized tour through the old house repertoire, right down to the labels collectors chase: the classic Dunhill mark, the understated British styling, and that unmistakable period look that predates the modern era.
DATING
Based on whatâs visible on the tins and the box, this set presents as late 1970s era Dunhill, consistent with the same style sampler tins you sold previously. The tins read manufactured and blended in the United Kingdom, and the overall packaging aesthetic matches the late 1970s period collectors recognize.
THE TWELVE BLENDS INCLUDED
These are the twelve tins shown as part of the set:
Standard Mixture Medium
A classic medium English in the old London tradition. Matured Virginias and fragrant Orientals with a measured portion of Latakia for warmth, poise, and that tidy Dunhill balance.
My Mixture 965
The famous â965â profile, rich and creamy. A fuller English mixture with Latakia depth and an elegant, rounded sweetness that made it a benchmark for generations of smokers.
London Mixture
A refined, clubroom English mixture with a brighter edge. Virginias and Turkish leaf carry the structure, with Latakia woven in for incense-like depth rather than heavy smoke.
Aromatic
Dunhillâs restrained idea of an aromatic. More gentlemanâs cologne than candy shop, soft sweetness and polish without losing the feel of proper leaf underneath.
Royal Yacht
Bold and unmistakable. A deep Virginia base with the signature dark-fruit character collectors always mention. The kind of tin that earned a reputation.
Ready Rubbed
A practical, old-school cut meant to light easily and behave in the bowl. Honest tobacco character, a steady all-day companion, and a very âperiodâ inclusion for a travel sampler.
Early Morning Pipe
A gentle opener for the day. Brightness, softness, and that famously calm temperament that made it a morning staple in the Dunhill lineup.
Virginia Ready Rubbed
A straight-shooting Virginia presentation in an easy, ready-to-pack format. Naturally sweet, bready, and simple in the best way.
Nightcap
The closer. Deep, dusky, and designed for late hours. A darker English mixture meant for the armchair, the lamp glow, and the last pipe of the evening.
Light Flake
A pressed Virginia style offering, lighter in hand than the heavier stuff, with that tidy British restraint. A clean, composed flake character.
Golden Hours
One of the more charming oddities in the Dunhill orbit. A true period piece, and a name that practically writes the scene for you.
Elizabethan Mixture
Virginia and Perique in the classic style. Natural sweetness with a measured spice, elegant and composed, and long respected as one of the great âproperâ VaPer mixtures.
CONDITION AND PRESENTATION BOX
This set is being offered with the original Dunhill Tobacco Collection box shown in the photos. The box has been reinforced with clear tape, and it shows honest age and shelf wear: creasing, edge and corner wear, scuffs, and areas of finish loss, especially along the lower portions and corners. The window shows wear consistent with age. It presents exactly like a surviving shop-era sampler should, sturdy and full of character, not a modern reprint.
Also included inside the box is the original Dunhill brochure or pamphlet, visible through the window as pictured.
ABOUT âVACUUM SEALEDâ VS TIN SEALS
The box itself states âvacuum sealed tins.â I have not opened the box, and these tins are being offered as-found and unopened. With tins of this age and style, seal tightness can vary from tin to tin, and many collectors are familiar with how these small Dunhill sampler tins tend to behave over time.
All twelve tins remain unopened. I have not opened the box, so I cannot verify the seal tightness of each individual tin, and with tins of this age the fit can vary. After more than four decades of quiet rest, the leaf inside will welcome a gentle touch should one choose to enjoy it; these small Dunhill tins are known to rehydrate beautifully. This set is offered primarily as a collectible.
