Description
2024: A tribute to the Oriental-forward Balkans of old, Cornell & Diehl’s Palmetto Balkan offers a distinctly Carolina take on a revered classic. Tangy, mature sun-cured 2018 Basma and 2019 Izmir lead the charge, supported by naturally sweet Carolina Red Virginias and a specially treated Latakia designed for balance rather than dominance. The result is a mellow, harmonized smoke marked by notes of stone fruit, subtle wood smoke, and a gently dry finish reminiscent of long-lost Syrian leaf. As the first 8oz release in C&D’s Small Batch portfolio, Palmetto Balkan is both inviting and complex—ideal for Balkan devotees and newcomers alike.
2026: The palmetto is the state tree of South Carolina, and Palmetto Balkan showcases the Lowcountry blending house's prowess. A tribute to the Oriental-forward blends of yesteryear, Cornell & Diehl's Small Batch Palmetto Balkan is a blend featuring premium, matured Oriental leaf in the form of 2019 Basma, 2022 Prilep varietals, and top-tier 2013, 2019, and 2023 Carolina Red Virginias. The result is an elegantly balanced flavor profile rich in notes of wood smoke, berries, complementary spices, and a wine-like character, reminiscent of the cherished Syrian leaf that many fondly remember. The innovative treatment of the mixture's Latakia is particularly noteworthy, achieved through a unique, proprietary process — mellowing the modern Latakia's often dominating campfire note and creating a harmonious equilibrium of flavors.
