Description

The Golden Triangle Series of pipe tobaccos is a showcase for some very rare versions of St. James Perique. Mark Ryan, of L.A. Poche Perique Company decided one year to put up a barrel of Perique from each of the four growing regions of St. James' Golden Triangle, rather than mixing them together for processing. This experiment created four distinctly different versions of Perique. In the Golden Triangle Series, Russ Ouellette has created a base blend that is used in the four regional mixtures that allows you to be able to see the difference in the flavor of the singular Perique varietals.

These tins have at least 8 years of age on them. Each tin is 1.75 oz or 50g of tobacco. Distributed by Meier & Dutch wholesale distributors. Made of Virginia, Burley and varietal St. James Perique. See photos.

In no particular order (descriptions from tobaccoreviews.com):

    1) St. James Perique: This is the big bonus in the Golden Triangle Series. Straight St. James Perique hasn’t been available to the public in many years. What is in the tin is 50 grams of 100% true St. James Perique, which is a combination of the four varietal types included in this series. Now you can add some of this very rare tobacco to your favorite blend, make a whole new mixture, or you can try it straight. In any case, it’s something you won’t see anywhere else.

    2) South Vacherie: The Perique from South Vacherie has a distinct espresso character supported by herbal notes. The spice in this varietal is like white pepper – lively but subdued. This might be the most complex of the four versions. With the base tobaccos being relatively neutral, those characteristics are more noticeable in this entry to the Golden Triangle Series.

    3) Paulina: This varietal exhibits a flinty character, with a peppery sourness that you notice toward the back of the tongue. There’s also of bit of a coffee note on the retrohale. In combination with the base blend, these flavor notes become very noticeable. Golden Triangle Paulina gives you a flavor that's a real departure from what you expect from Perique. This varietal exhibits a flinty character, with a peppery sourness that you notice toward the back of the tongue. 4) Grand Point: With Grand Point, there’s a more subdued spiciness, more akin to cinnamon and nutmeg. It also has a fruitiness that comes across as a wine-like note, and there’s a hint of cocoa in the flavor. The spiced wine character is the most noticeable in this blend. This entry in the Golden Triangle Series comes the closest to what people expect from Perique.

    5) Belmont: The Belmont varietal might be the most surprising. The aroma of the leaf is reminescent of brined olives. There’s a butteriness and a bit of saltiness. The spice is bold, like Cayenne pepper. In this version, the creaminess is there with the pepper more noticeable on the finish, with the base blend adding some sweetness. Golden Triangle Belmont will give you a whole new concept of what Perique is.

Ignore the hand written dates on the bottom of the tins, that’s the date I acquired it. These tins are sealed and have always been stored in a climate and temperate controlled environment.
