Description
Up for auction is a lot of five sealed 2oz tins of Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River, circa 2024. These were made by Sutliff, before the company closed and Seattle Pipe Club production moved to Cornell & Diehl.
Mississippi River is the first of Joe Lankford’s blends and the one that built the Seattle Pipe Club’s reputation. It’s a mixture of rich red Virginias spiced with Orientals, Latakia, and Perique, pressed into cakes and cut into crumble cakes that rub out easily. Reviewers describe a mild-to-medium strength, a sweet and tangy Virginia character, and a smoky depth from the Latakia without it taking over. It’s also a good blend to cellar, and the tins have had some time to settle.
When Sutliff closed, many pipe smokers weren’t sure the Seattle Pipe Club blends would continue. Tins from the Sutliff run are a finite supply, and these are from the final years of it.
