Description
A man who takes his leisure seriously knows the quiet value of a proper pipe. It is an unhurried ritual, and it demands the right leaf. What we have here is a remarkably clean artifact from that deliberate way of life: an unopened, seven-ounce tin of Mac Baren’s classic Burley London Blend. It has spent the last fifty years resting undisturbed in a cool, dark cellar. The vintage lithographed container is in excellent shape, with the white and golden-brown face looking just about as sharp as the day it left Denmark.
Dating this specimen is a simple matter of checking the original paper distributor label on the bottom. The stamp marks it from Fireside Industries, Inc. out of Moonachie, New Jersey. For the collector, that tells the story. Fireside shifted its importing operations from Manhattan to New Jersey in the autumn of 1970, placing this large pocket-twist tin squarely in the early-to-mid part of that decade. It is a prime example of Harald Halberg’s blending house at its peak, produced just a few years after the blend’s debut in 1965.
Inside this round tin sits a ready-rubbed, broken flake of choice White Burley, balanced with a portion of mature Virginia leaf. A fresh tin of London Blend in the old days was known for its bright, nutty vigor. However, a half-century of quiet rest alters the character completely. The natural sugars in the Virginia have gradually darkened, taking the edge off the smoke, while the robust Burley base has settled into a smooth, substantial maturity. The traditional Danish topping—a dry, subtle note of cocoa, toasted nut, and natural malt—has thoroughly seasoned the leaf over the decades. The result is a cool, bite-free smoke that recalls the heavy leather chairs of a proper club. Whether it is destined for a permanent spot on your shelf or the bowl of your favorite briar, a vintage tin of this size and condition is a rare find.
