Description
There was a time when the great London tobacco houses produced blends that were spoken of with the same reverence as fine wines. Recipes were carefully guarded, tobaccos were selected for their natural character, and a good Virginia mixture required little more than exceptional leaf and the steady hand of an experienced blender.
By the early 1980s, many of those celebrated old mixtures had quietly disappeared. Among them was Alfred Dunhill's famous Shell Mixture, a mellow Virginia sliced roll that had graced tobacconists' shelves in the 1950s and 1960s. But its story was not quite finished.
In 1982, Peter Siegel of Marble Arch traveled to London and met with Ken McConnell of the venerable C. E. McConnell tobacco works on Barking Road. The ambition was to bring back something of the old London blending tradition — not simply another modern mixture, but the character and craftsmanship of tobaccos that had once made British blending famous. Dunhill's old Shell Mixture became one of their most challenging projects. The original curly-cut preparation proved impractical to reproduce, so McConnell reimagined it as a traditional Virginia flake, incorporating carefully selected Old Belt Carolina leaf until the desired character emerged.
The result was Elephant & Castle Deerstalker.
And what a fitting name it was. One can almost picture an English country gentleman, tweed cap pulled low, resting beside a hedgerow with a trusty briar and a tobacco pouch in his pocket. Deerstalker belonged to that world of quiet afternoons, country estates, leather armchairs, and the leisurely ritual of a well-packed pipe.
The tobacco itself was a celebration of Virginia leaf. Rather than relying on the heavy smokiness of Latakia or the peppery spice of Perique, Deerstalker allowed the natural character of the Virginias to take center stage. Its old-fashioned appeal lay in the promise of mellow, satisfying tobacco flavor — the sort of mixture that needed no elaborate perfume to announce its quality. One can imagine the finest examples offering that delicate balance of hay, warm bread, natural sweetness, and the gentle tang associated with well-matured Virginias. After four decades of careful preservation, such a flake might develop even deeper impressions of dried fruit, dark honey, and rich, aged tobacco.
The beautiful red-and-gold Elephant & Castle label, designed by Anthony Spinelli, was itself a small work of art. Beneath the ornamented banners stands the wonderfully elaborate elephant carrying its castle, an image reminiscent of the tobacconist labels and trade illustrations of an earlier century.
Sadly, the Elephant & Castle story was brief. In 1989, C. E. McConnell announced the closure of its London factory, bringing an end to the original production of these remarkable mixtures. And so this little tin, dating to 1985, has survived for more than forty years. Not merely an old tobacco tin, but a tangible reminder of a vanished London workshop, a master blender's craftsmanship, and an ambitious attempt to preserve one of the great lost traditions of British pipe tobacco. A little piece of old London, sealed away in red and gold, from a time when some of the finest things in life were enjoyed slowly.
