Description

    1992...

There was still something wonderfully familiar about the old neighborhood tobacconist. The heavy scent of rich leaf, the polished wooden counters, handsome briar pipes resting under glass, and those colorful little tins bearing names that generations of pipe smokers had come to know and love.

Among the most distinguished of them all was Alfred Dunhill.

Offered here is an extraordinarily rare, beautifully preserved 1992 tin of Alfred Dunhill Aromatic Pipe Tobacco, containing 50 grams of this classic British mixture, still completely factory sealed after more than three decades.

The story of Dunhill tobacco began in 1907, when Alfred Dunhill opened his celebrated shop on Duke Street in London's fashionable St. James's district. Over the following decades, the Dunhill name became synonymous with the finest traditions of British pipe smoking, its distinguished mixtures accompanying generations of enthusiasts through changing eras.

Unlike the celebrated Latakia-rich English mixtures for which Dunhill was so well known, Aromatic offered something rather different. A carefully balanced marriage of American and Brazilian Virginia tobaccos with smooth, dark Black Cavendish, pressed and fermented to develop a pleasantly mellow, aromatic character.

Those fortunate enough to remember the original mixture have described a wonderfully intriguing assortment of flavors. Naturally sweet Virginias offering gentle grassy and citrus notes, darker Cavendish lending a soft caramel-like richness, and delicate suggestions of honey, dried fruit, toasted nuts, and perhaps a whisper of licorice. An old-fashioned British aromatic in which the character of the tobacco itself was never entirely lost beneath the casing.

One can almost picture a gentleman settling into his favorite leather armchair after a long day's work, a well-loved Dunhill briar in hand, the evening newspaper folded beside him, and the pleasant fragrance of Aromatic drifting through the warm lamplight.

By nineteen ninety two, production of Dunhill's famous mixtures had passed to Murray's of Northern Ireland, marking a distinctive and highly collectible chapter in the history of the brand. This particular tin also bears its original American distributor's label from Lane Limited of Tucker, Georgia—a charming connection to the tobacconists who once stocked these fine British mixtures across the United States. Flip the tin over, and you will find the original, handwritten vintage date directly on the label, marking its arrival in October of 1992.

And remarkably, this tin remains completely factory sealed, its contents completely undisturbed for more than thirty-four years.
Dunhill Aromatic has long since disappeared from the shelves of the neighborhood tobacco shop, and the world of traditional pipe smoking has changed enormously. Yet here remains one pristine reminder of those days.

Fifty grams of Dunhill Aromatic. October 1992. Still factory sealed.

More than three decades of tobacco history resting beneath one little metal lid.

Another wonderful survivor from a bygone age, proudly presented by your friend, Pipe Appeal.
