Description

An intact and beautifully preserved, hermetically sealed (unopened) 2 oz (two ounce) cutter-top tin of 1950s Samuel Gawith's Skiff Mixture Mild.

A unique and arguably once in a lifetime find, this cutter-top was recovered from the backroom stock of a shuttered tobacconist in the United Kingdom and is in original condition, including the cutter tin. Likely dating from 1950 (if not earlier), as vacuum-sealed tins rose to prominence thereafter, this cutter-top tin of Skiff Mixture represents the oldest surviving (in suitable condition for smoking) exemplar of Samuel Gawith tobacco in circulation of which I am aware, and the only Samuel Gawith cutter-top I have ever seen (exceptions being likely found at the Samuel Gawith in-house collection).

The Skiff Mixture Mild in its early incarnation is an Oriental mixture, comprising a tawny blend of exquisite Virginia and Oriental ribbons with a heady and intensely fruity aroma, carefully wrapped in wax paper insulating it from the tin.

    Details from the lithograph label:

    Skiff Mixture Mild (Regd.)
    "Cool as a Sea Breeze"
    "For the Outdoor Man"
"To Open, Use Cutter In Lid"
    "2 oz. NETT"
"Manufactured in the Heart of English Lakeland for 150 Years"
"Product of the House of Samuel Gawith, Kendal, England"

Tin weight: 109 grams (without cutter lid)
Lid, bottom and sides of the tin are rust free.
Seal and Pressure Intact - Lid center bulging approx. 0.3 cm
Tin height: exactly 8 cm at edge, 8.3 cm at center (at 75°F/24°C)
    Tin (upper) diameter: 6.7 cm
