Description
From the Pipe Appeal cellar comes a big and bold survivor of America’s aromatic tradition: a sealed 14oz tin of V.I.P. Pipe Mixture. Blended and packed by Lane Limited in Tucker, Georgia, this example carries both a UPC barcode and a California Proposition 65 warning, dating it to the 1980s–1990s production era — the final decades before the blend was discontinued.
V.I.P. has roots stretching back to the House of Edgeworth, where Larus & Brother first introduced it in the early 1960s. When Larus closed in the ’70s, Lane Limited carried the recipe forward for several more decades. Though no longer made today, the blend remains remembered for its unique and unmistakable “Sweet Birch Southern Flavor.”
That top note, often likened to birch beer or root beer, was layered over a base of burleys, golden Virginias, and dark tobaccos, producing a pleasantly sweet, old-fashioned aroma. The cross-cut cut promised easy packing and smooth smoking, with a room note described at the time as “delightful in pouch or pipe.”
This generously sized tin remains factory sealed, with bright graphics and clean condition. Large “pounder-style” tins like this rarely surface, especially in this later Lane packaging, making it both a nostalgic smoke and a handsome display piece.
