Description

    “Strength for the Sailor’s Pipe!”

See video of actual tin listed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DOJqhBYguU

A genuine survivor from the war years: an unopened WWII-era tin of Capstan Navy Cut — Full Strength, produced by W.D. & H.O. Wills of Bristol & London. Embossed on the base with “NAAFI STORES FOR H.M. FORCES,” this 2 oz air-tight tin was supplied to British servicemen through the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes and carried in kit bags from barracks to sea.

I have never encountered another example of a Capstan Full Strength tin in the wild, let alone a wartime version. It is extraordinarily rare and remarkably well preserved for being more than eight decades old.

Capstan had been a household name since the late 19th century, but it became a steady comfort in the 1940s. The Full Strength brown-label variant was the boldest of the line — a stout, bracing Virginia profile prized by seasoned pipe men. Collectors who have opened aged examples describe deeper, darker character than the Mild (yellow) and Medium (blue) siblings. The Full Strength expression was later discontinued; today only the familiar Capstan Medium (blue tin) remains on the market, which makes a wartime Full Strength like this especially scarce.

    Details & Condition
    - Maker: W.D. & H.O. Wills (Bristol & London)
    - Blend: Capstan Navy Cut — Full Strength (brown-label designation)
    - Era: World War II (early 1940s)
    - Military Marking: Embossed base “NAAFI STORES FOR H.M.
    FORCES”
    - Weight: 2 oz (printed on the side label)
    - Container: Original “Air-Tight Tin” designed to keep leaf in condition across climates
    - Condition notes: The tin shows the gentle bulge often seen on well-sealed examples from this era, usually a promising sign of preserved contents. As with any 80+ year-old tobacco, the contents can’t be guaranteed, but this one presents beautifully and remains an outstanding survivor. There are a few small paper tears on the side label and areas of surface rust on the tin — entirely consistent with a relic this old and adding to its authentic patina.
    - Visuals: Crisp wartime graphics with the Capstan ship motif, Wills trademarks on the lid, and that unmistakable service-issue embossing beneath.

A handsome, history-rich centerpiece that captures the look, feel, and spirit of 1940s pipe culture. It presents as if it were lifted straight from a NAAFI counter — the very sort of tin a soldier might have tucked into his kit before shipping out. These were the small comforts that steadied nerves, filled quiet moments, and reminded men of home. A tin like this doesn’t just belong in a collection — it defines one.
