Description

Step into a warm oak-paneled evening some forty-odd years ago—when a pipe, a soft chair, and a tin of Dunhill were the proper close to a long day.
Spread out on the table before you is exactly the sort of sampler a tobacconist on Duke Street might have shown a curious traveler: eight original Dunhill trial-size tins, untouched since the late 1970s.

These 10 gram pocket tins were produced in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s into the early 1980s, under the classic four-bar Dunhill logo. No barcodes. No warning labels. Only the quiet, understated elegance the old house was known for. Offered as tobacconist samplers, gift assortments, and the gentleman’s travel set, they were a miniature introduction to Dunhill’s full repertoire.

    THE BLENDS

    Early Morning Pipe
Bright Virginias and delicately toasted Orientals. Creamy, mild, and quietly citrus. The late-70s blend contained no Latakia, making it a soft, dawn-friendly mixture with gentle sweetness and a feathery touch of spice.

    My Mixture 965
Cypriot Latakia for rich smoke and leather, Macedonian Orientals for fragrant depth, and a cool brown Cavendish base. Creamy, balanced, and unmistakably Dunhill. The 1970s formula is celebrated for its incense-like character and round, satisfying body.

    Royal Yacht
Steamed Virginias of considerable strength with Dunhill’s signature plum-like essence. Deep malt, dark fruit, and a warm fermented sweetness. A bold evening mixture with real backbone.

    Elizabethan Mixture
Virginias married with a touch of Louisiana Perique. Notes of fig, brown bread, pepper, and natural sweetness. The late-1970s version is earthy, refined, and beautifully poised between strength and subtlety.

    London Mixture
Matured Virginias, fragrant Turkish leaf, and a moderate presence of Cypriot Latakia. A refined English mixture with citrusy edges, incense-like spice, and a measured smokiness suited to the London clubroom tradition.

    Standard Mixture Medium
Bright and matured Virginias blended with fragrant Orientals and just enough Cypriot Latakia to add warmth. Medium-bodied, cool, lightly nutty from the traditional toasting, and designed as an all-day English.

    Gold Blend
A Virginia Cavendish aromatic introduced in the late 1960s. Gentle sweetness with hints of honey, vanilla, and soft citrus. Clean, smooth, and decidedly British in its restraint.

    Golden Hours
A very short-lived aromatic from around 1979 to the early 1980s. Carolina Virginias, Burley, and black Cavendish with a discreet vanilla-caramel note. Rare, graceful, and seldom encountered sealed in any form.

    CONDITION

All eight tins remain unopened with their original friction-fit lids, just as these trial-size offerings left Dunhill in the late 1970s. These minis were never vacuum-sealed, relying instead on the simple pressed metal lip that was standard for sampler tins of the era. After more than four decades of quiet rest, the leaf inside will welcome a gentle touch should one choose to enjoy it; collectors note that these small Dunhill tins rehydrate beautifully. This set is offered primarily as a collectible. The tins show clean metal, strong labels, and only the soft, even patina one hopes to find on true vintage Dunhill.
