Description
There is a certain charm to the old Mac Baren tins that modern packaging never quite replaced.
This sealed vintage tin of The Solent Mixture has that look: black label, red border, gold lettering, the Mac Baren crest, Mild Strength, Made in Denmark, and the old Fireside Industries, Inc. distributor sticker from Moonachie, New Jersey. It is clean, handsome, and unmistakably from the days when a pipe tobacco tin was still allowed to look like something worth keeping.
The Solent Mixture was first produced by Mac Baren in 1950, placing the blend right in that postwar pipe-smoking world of proper tins, polished briars, counter jars, matchboxes, and men who knew exactly what they wanted. The name comes from the Solent, the stretch of water between southern England and the Isle of Wight, and it fits the blend well. A little English, a little maritime, mild in strength, and easy to return to.
This was not Mac Baren trying to make a heavy Latakia mixture. Solent was more civilized than that. Virginia and Burley gave it structure, Mac Baren Cavendish brought the soft Danish sweetness, and Latakia added just enough smoke to give it an English edge without taking over the bowl. The result was a mild Danish-English mixture with balance, comfort, and manners.
That is the appeal here. Solent feels like after-supper tobacco. A clean briar, a chair by the lamp, the paper folded nearby, and a bowl that asks for time instead of attention. Not loud. Not showy. Just well-made Danish tobacco with a little smoke in its collar.
This particular tin appears to be a later U.S. market example, most likely late 1970s to early 1980s, based on the 2 oz format, Made in Denmark marking, label style, and Fireside Industries distributor sticker. The tin itself is not from 1950, but the blend carries that 1950 lineage, and this older import presentation has a great period look.
The tin appears to be in mint sealed condition, with no shake and excellent shelf presence. The label is crisp, the colors remain strong, and the tin presents beautifully in hand.
Offered at no reserve.
