Description
This unopened 7 ounce Mac Barenâs Mixture Scottish Blend tin represents one of the great old Danish pipe tobacco standards in its classic American export form.
The story begins in Svendborg, Denmark, where the company traces its roots to a tobacco factory founded in 1826. Harald Halberg acquired the factory in 1887, and the Halberg family carried the business forward through generations. Older tins like this still bear the âManufactured by Harald Halbergâ wording, a corporate identity the company used long after Haraldâs lifetime and before formally becoming Mac Baren Tobacco Company in 1995.
The blend itself was introduced in April 1958 by Jørgen Halberg and became one of the tobaccos that made Mac Baren internationally known. Mixture Scottish Blend was built as a more approachable Danish answer to the heavier mixtures of the day: refined, balanced, pleasant in the room, but still rooted in real tobacco character.
Mac Baren described Mixture as being made from more than 35 different tobacco leaves from different parts of the world. The traditional profile combines matured Virginias, Burley, Cavendish, and dark-fired Kentucky, giving the blend its reputation for soft sweetness, toasted nuts, hay, cocoa, wood, and a gentle spice when smoked slowly.
Part of the lore around Mixture is how central it became to Mac Barenâs identity. Within only a few years of its introduction, it reportedly captured a major share of the Danish pipe tobacco market. Retired Mac Baren blender Per Jensen later described Mixture as essential to the companyâs success, and longtime smokers often remembered it as an all-day blend: familiar, steady, and best appreciated with a slow hand.
This example was made for the U.S. market and distributed by Fireside Industries, Inc. of Moonachie, New Jersey. The bottom label reads:
Distributed in the U.S.A. by Fireside Industries, Inc.
50 Graphic Pl.
Moonachie, N.J. 07074
Net Weight 7 Ounces
Made in Denmark
That Fireside Industries Moonachie label, along with the 7 ounce U.S. canister format, older Harald Halberg wording, and pre-barcode packaging, places this tin most convincingly in the mid-to-late 1970s.
A handsome unopened example from the classic Danish export era, with strong appeal for collectors of Mac Baren, vintage pipe tobacco, and old-world tobacciana.
