Description
Eclipse was one of the tobacco industry's most unusual experimental products. Rather than functioning like a conventional cigarette, Eclipse used a carbon heat source to primarily heat rather than burn the tobacco, and R.J. Reynolds promoted the original version as producing “Nearly 90% Less Second-Hand Smoke,” along with virtually no ashes and greatly reduced lingering odor.
This early package retains the Vantage name, identifying it as the original-generation Eclipse packaging used before RJR redesigned the product and packaging in 1997.
Especially interesting is the original “Eclipse – The Inside Story” promotional booklet, which remains attached to the package beneath/with the original wrapping. These explanatory materials were part of RJR's early effort to introduce consumers to the unusual Eclipse technology.
The packages appear full and unopened with their original wrapping intact. Please note normal age-related wrinkling and handling wear as clearly shown in the photographs.
A fascinating piece of 1990s R.J. Reynolds tobacco history, test-market advertising, and early heat-not-burn cigarette technology.
