Rare R.J. Reynolds Horizon cigarette promotional presentation kit, produced for RJR employees during the expansion of the Horizon test-market program in 1991.
The book-style presentation folder is titled “The Sweet Smell of Success – The New Bestseller From R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company” and opens to reveal two Horizon Fresh Aroma king-size cigarette packs: Horizon Smooth Tobacco Flavor and Horizon Smooth Menthol Flavor
Both packs contain 20 Class A cigarettes and appear to remain factory sealed in their original cellophane.
The inside cover contains a printed letter addressed “Dear RJR Team Member” and signed by James W. Johnston, Chairman and CEO. The letter explains that these new 85mm Horizon styles were being introduced into test markets in St. Louis and Dallas on April 1, following an earlier Horizon test in Atlanta.
Period industry records confirm that Horizon was introduced in the Atlanta test market in 1990 and that shipments of the reformulated product began for the St. Louis and Dallas markets in March 1991. Horizon was an unusual R.J. Reynolds experiment designed around a more pleasant-smelling cigarette and was ultimately a short-lived brand.
This is considerably more unusual than an individual Horizon pack because the original employee presentation folder, introductory letter, and both cigarette varieties remain together as issued.
The presentation folder shows some age-related wear, light spotting, discoloration, and edge wear. The interior displays very well. Please examine all photographs closely for exact condition.
